Located high above Tucson, with a history dating back to 1956 and the Cold War, the Mount Lemmon Skycenter Observatory has developed into an astronomic research and education facility with few peers. Their mission is to engage people of all ages in the process of scientific exploration by using the local "Sky Island" environment to merge a wide variety of science and engineering disciplines, thereby fostering a deeper understanding of our Earth within the Universe. We don’t know how many neighborhoods are shown in the photo below.
The Sky Center’s mission is to engage people of all ages in the process of scientific exploration by using the local "Sky Island" environment to merge a wide variety of science and engineering disciplines, thereby fostering a deeper understanding of our Earth within the Universe.
Steward Observatory Field Station is located on a lease in the Coronado National Forest, with permits to operate educational camps and research activities. SkyCenter presents various educational activities including a public evening observing program, summer Sky Island programs, workshops, camps, remote observing, and special educational events.
How to get there: This one is tougher than most of our blogs (Google Maps?). Find Catalina Highway and follow the signs in the picture below (but before the town) turn right on to Ski Run Rd.
All Skycenter programs have capacity limits and are available by advance reservation only. Note that tickets often sell out, especially around holidays and in the spring months, where programs fill 1 - 3 weeks in advance.

This location is not really close to any neighborhoods in Marana, although Gladden Farms is closest, but it is truly worth the drive and visit.
