The town of Marana, Arizona, is feeling a great deal of pride following its handling of all the hardships presented by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. But as the town itself acknowledges, there is more work to be done in 2021- and in the years beyond.
One thing the town can't wait to get started on is improving its local airport. "The Marana Regional Airport letter of map revision and land rezone initiative removed the airport from the flood plain, resulting in a greater potential for future growth and commercial interest," Interim Town Manager Terry Rozema wrote in the Tucson Local Media blog post.
Rozema explains that the Marana Regional Airport (AVQ) is anxiously anticipating the addition of a control tower, which would upgrade AVQ to a Class D airport. At some point in 2021, Rozema hopes to determine where exactly on the airport property to build the control tower. He hopes to begin the construction by 2024. And he adds that the FAA will foot most of the bill. "The FAA will fund 91.06% of the project and 100% of the labor costs," Rozema stated, "While the Town of Marana and the Arizona Department of Transportation will each fund a 4.47% share."
